Meaningful community engagement
Beyond simply gathering input, meaningful engagement empowers residents as partners. It recognizes their knowledge, culture, and lived experience as valuable contributions. This collaborative process not only strengthens social cohesion but also ensures that change is guided by those most impacted, leading to fairer and more resilient communities.
Community engagement is our bread and butter.
-
JCL works hard to ensure all voices, especially those historically marginalized or underrepresented, are included in decision-making. This means actively reaching out to diverse groups, removing barriers to participation (like language, timing, or technology), and valuing lived experience as expertise.
-
We effectively and openly communicate goals, processes, and outcomes. Communities engage meaningfully when they understand how their input will be used and see follow-through on commitments.
-
Team work makes the dream work. We don’t just consult with communities and agencies, we partner with them. Co-designing programs, policies, or events ensures that solutions reflect real community needs and foster shared ownership.
-
We use multiple engagement formats (in-person, online, multilingual, visual, and accessible for people with disabilities) to ensure everyone is able to access the information they need. We meet people where they are—culturally, technologically, and geographically—and adapt methods as feedback comes in.
What we’ve been up to:

"Van Nuys Blvd, Our Blvd, Our Way" was the inspiring theme of LA Councilwoman Imelda Padilla’s community forum this weekend. It was a great opportunity for residents of the East San Fernando Valley to engage in meaningful dialogue about important local issues.
The Crenshaw Chamber of Commerce hosted a lively Black Business Month Mixer in partnership with Chase.
